Colorado Stream Update: The Big Thompson is really only fishable directly below Olympus dam

Current Conditions at Big Thompson:

The Big T is fishing well as long as you stay close to Lake Estes, which you'll have to because the creek freezes up not far from it. The weather has been very cold here which has stunted any insects from hatching but on warmer days it's possible to see BWO's hatch and definitely midges. 5x fluorocarbon down to small chocolate WD-40s, RSIIs, foam back emergers, top secrets, or jujubee midge patterns will be the winning ticket.

The fish are feeding mostly on midges during the midday hatch hours. Make sure you are getting a good drag free drift in order to hook fish. Tiny tippets and small midge and mayfly patterns are hooking the most fish. The fish are pooled up right now. Look for fish holding in the slowest and deepest runs and holes in the river. Fly fishing reports are good. Use a long 9’ or 10’ rod to get the most control out of your nymph rig.  The fishing is fair.  Clear skies and 28-31 degree weather. The water temperature was between 36-39 degrees and Crystal Clear.
