Colorado Stream Update: For the most part the Gunny is frozen over from Almont all the way to Blue Mesa except for small sections in town.

Current Conditions at Gunnison:

The best section of the Gunnison to fish right now is the whitewater park right in town as almost the entire river from Almont down to Blue Mesa are iced over. Despite the very small stretch of fishable water there is some good news! A lot of the massive, and I do mean massive, Rainbows that typically live down river in private water ranches have moved up to the whitewater park because it's the only open free flowing water. Catching them is not easy but they are there to be had. Use 4x tippet and have a brown San Juan Worm as your lead fly and trail that with larger sized Baetis patterns like Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, and Two-Bit Hookers. The large hogs are hunkered down on the bottom of the river so make sure your nymph rig has the appropriate amount of weight to get down to the bottom quickly. The takes are extremely subtle so if you're unable to sight fish make sure and set your hook on any pause of the indicator.

No need to be on the water early, wait for the sun to come up in order to warm up the water temperature. Try a tandem nymph rig. Use a bright colored but small San Juan worm in red or pink to help you see where your flies are drifting.  The fishing is slow.  Clear skies and 40-43 degree weather. The water temperature was between 32-35 degrees and Crystal Clear.
