Colorado Stream Update: The tail water below Stagecoach Reservoir is the best section of the Yampa to fish right now.

Current Conditions at Yampa:

The access road to the Stagecoach tail water is open once again and the fishing is making the trek definitely worth while. For the time being, we recommend fishing the tail water as the Yampa through Steamboat is running a bit high and off-color. When at the tail water most feeding is taking place subsurface on small Baetis and Midge insects. So patterns such as Barr's Emerger, RSIIs, and JuJu Baetis are all working great. Small Midge patterns-- #22 cream colored Bling Midges and #22 olive colored JuJuBee Midges are fooling trout as well. Also, and as much as I do not like to use this, 6x tippet is the best size tippet to use-- using fluorocarbon will help tremendously as well. On overcast days you will see fishing rising to a Sprout Midge pattern of a Griffith's Gnat in soft pocket water.

The weather is warming up outside and it is beginning to look like spring again! Time to head to Colorado‚Äôs western slope for some of the first fly casts of the year. Due to the spawning fish, fishing egg patterns can be quite productive.  The fishing is good.  Clear skies and 52-55 degree weather. The water temperature was between 36-39 degrees and Crystal Clear.
